Wednesday, May 31

Highlights:

  • This morning in Literacy, we worked on our middle for our fractured fairytale. This is where lots of the exciting parts happen! Ask me what I have included in mine.
  • For Math, we practiced measuring items around the room using both standard and non-standard units. Ask me what we found. 
  • In PE, we did day 2 of kickball. Ask me what was my favourite part of the game.
  • For Science, we continued learning about bridges. We then worked in small groups to plan and build our contraption for the Great Egg Drop Challenge! Ask me what this is about and what my group decided on.
  • In Makerspace, we had a building challenge where we had to build a bridge that was strong enough to hold a weight. Ask me what materials I used and if our bridge worked.

Highlights:
  • This morning in Math, we started to learn about the imperial and metric system of measurement. Ask me which one we use in Canada!
  • For Literacy, we started to write the beginning of our fractured fairytales. Ask me what is included in mine.
  • In PE, we played kickball. Ask me how we play!
  • For Science, we are learning about different kinds of bridges. Ask me what is one type bride and what shape we found in truss bridges.

Highlights:

  • This morning we started our day with some Maker exploration. Ask me what materials I chose to build and use during this time.
  • For Social, we continued our Ukraine visual journal pages. Ask me what are 3 things that I learned about this country.
  • In PE, we played Newton ball. Ask me how to play this game.
  • For Literacy, we finished learning all the cursive capital letters. We have improved so much with both our capital and lowercase letters. Ask me to show you my signature and also a sentence!
  • During Field Study, we connected our learning about storytelling and fairytales to our outdoor exploration. We had to find 6 natural items and use them to create and tell a fairytale. Ask me what items I found and what my story was about.

Highlights:

  • In Math, we worked with pattern blocks and practiced manipulating them in different ways. Ask me to explain what the three different concepts below are.
  • For Literacy, we used our four square planner to begin our fractured fairytales. Ask me to tell you what I included in my planner.
  • During PE, we did three different activities, We did handball, soccer, and basketball. Ask me which was my favourite.
  • In Social, we started our show what you know visual journal page on the Ukraine. Ask me what I included on my pages.
 
  • For Science, we finished up our visual journal pages that we started yesterday about our zoo field trip.

Highlights:

  • Today in Math, we learned the difference between perpendicular, parallel, and intersecting lines. Ask me to draw what these lines look like.
  • For Literacy, we continued learning about fractured fairytales. We are beginning to plan our own! Ask me what fairytale I have chosen to fracture and what changes I have made.

  • For Science, we started a visual journal page reflecting on our zoo field trip. Ask me what I added to my page.
  • During Social, we are beginning to learn about Tunisia. Ask me what continent we can find it in!
  • We had some great participation for Career Day! Check out some of our great costumes.

Highlights:

  • Today was our Zoo Field Trip! We had an amazing time! Ask me what were 3 of my highlights from the trip.
  • Thank you to our parent volunteers who came along with us! We are very grateful that you could spend this awesome day with our class.

Highlights:

  • Today in Math, we continued working on angles. We did an art project where we had to measure different angles using a protractor. 
  • In PE, we did Freedom Frenzy to end our week!
  • During Science, we reviewed the expectations for the field trip. We also talked about what a predator and prey are. Finally we discussed how some animals have adaptations that protect them. Ask me what is an example.
  • In Field Study, we started off by having some time to play outside! We were very excited to be outside after having to stay in for most of the week. After, we explored some of the different animals and their habitats.  We can't wait to see some of them at the zoo!

Reminders:

  • There is no school on Monday. Have a wonderful long weekend!
  • On Tuesday, we will be going on our field trip to the zoo. Below are some reminders:
    • We will be boarding the bus at 9:15am, it is important that students are on time for school. 
    • Students need to bring a litterless lunch, a water bottle, and a backpack that can fit a clipboard.
    • Please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather and wearing comfortable shoes.
    • Please remind your child about field trip expectations and appropriate behaviour on the bus and when at the zoo.

Highlights:

  • This morning in Literacy, we practiced working on r-controlled vowels. Ask me what it does to a vowel and some examples of words that have a bossy r!
  • For Math, we learned about superimposing angles. We went around the school and found obtuse and acute angles.
  • In PE, we started the class by doing rock, paper, scissors four corners. We then played revenge tag!
  • For Music, we created a venn diagram comparing two songs. We compared the feelings they gave us, the instruments we heard, and also whether it was a round or a cannon. Ask me what this means.
  • Today in Science, we learned about what a life cycle is and looked at a few different ones. In our visual journals we drew our own life cycles!

  • There is no school on Monday.
  • Our class field trip to the zoo is on Tuesday. Please review the parent letter that was sent in the field trip package to ensure that your child is prepared.

Highlights:

  • Today in Math, we continued learning about angles. We worked on reading different angles and deciding if it was acute, obtuse or right. Ask me what the angle below is.

  • For Literacy, we worked on our next uppercase cursive letters. We are doing so great with learning how to write and read in cursive. Ask me to show you which letters we did!
  • For PE, we did capture the flag again with a twist! Ask me what was different today.
  • In the afternoon, we did our new word sorts. Ask me what rule I had today and an example of some words.
  • During Science, we had a short introduction to animal life cycles to help us prepare for our upcoming field trip. We discussed the difference between animals that are domesticated and ones that are wild. In our visual journals we wrote about how animals in each category have their needs met. Ask me for an example.

  • Tomorrow is Cobs Treat Day for those that ordered. 
  • Our zoo field trip is on Tuesday.

Highlights:

  • Today in Math, we completed our "Show What You Know" for our time unit. We also started to look for different angles around the room. Ask me what the different angles are called.
  • For Literacy, we learned about what makes a story a fractured fairytale. We read another fractured story called Bigfoot Cinderrrrrella. Ask me what was different in this story.
  • During PE, we started our class with musical four corners. Then we played capture the flag!
  • In Science, we tested our lookout towers from yesterday! Ask me how mine held up against the fan.

Highlights:

  • In Math, we learned how to convert time into a 24 hour format. Ask me what 3:00pm would be.
  • For Literacy, we learned about fractured fairytales. We read the classic story The Three Little Pigs and then read the fractured version, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs. Ask me what was different in the fractured.
  • During PE, we played bench ball! It is one of our favourite activities to do.
  • In Science, we did a Rapunzel's Tower Challenge! We used recycled materials to create a tower that was at least 30cm tall and had a base. Tomorrow we will be testing them to see if they are strong and stable.
  • During Maker Space, we worked on creating a storyboard for a fairytale. In partners we chose a fairytale to create a code for. Ask me which one we chose.

  • Field Trips forms are due Wednesday. If you have not sent it back, please return it as soon as possible.
  • Cobs Healthy Hunger Treat Day is on Thursday for those that ordered.

Highlights:

  • Today in Music, we practiced singing in a round. Ask me what songs we sang!
  • For PE, we did a Freedom Frenzy! We played gaga ball and then had a choice of three centres. Ask me which ones I did.
  • In Math, we started with our basic facts practice. We are getting much quicker with our facts! We continued practicing reading time, determining if it was am or pm, and then drawing what the hands of a clock would look like for certain times. 
  • During Literacy, we are starting to learn our capital cursive letters. We did A, C, and O. Ask me to show you what they look like. 
  • For Field Study, we enjoyed the beautiful weather outside and worked on our journaling skills. We did 6 quick sketches of various things and then also did 6 quick writes to go along. Ask me what were some of the things I drew and wrote about.

  • This morning in Math, we continued practice reading time. Ask me what the time below is.
  • For Literacy we read the fairy tale "Rumpelstiltskin". Ask me what story elements were in it and what features of a fairy tale it had.
  • In PE, we continued working on our Drum Fit routines.
  • This afternoon, we worked on a special project! We will be taking them home tomorrow.

Highlights:

  • This morning we did our reading rotations! Ask me what was new about our writing centre.
  • For Math, we continued creating times using analog clocks. We also practiced our Math games for tomorrow night. We are excited to show our parents!
  • In PE, we continued practicing our Drum Fit routines. Ask me what are some of the moves we are using.
  • For Science, we did a building challenge today connected to Jack and the Beanstalk. We had to create a freestanding tower using only 5 pieces of paper and a set length of tape. Ask me how my group did with this challenge!
  • In Social, we talked about the services that the people in the Ukraine need. Ask me what are some examples.

Highlights:

  • Today in Math, we started to learn how to read an analog clock. We practiced making different times on a clock. Ask me what are some things I noticed about a clock.
  • For Literacy, we talked about the story elements. Ask me what are some examples. We then read Little Red Riding Hood and found each of the story elements.
  • In Social, we learned about the goods and services, imports/exports and natural resources found in the Ukraine. Ask me what is an example.
  • During Maker Space, we continued learning about Scratch. We worked with a partner to create a short animation that tells a three part story. Ask me what our story was about.

Highlights:

  • In Math, we did a show what you know for our fractions unit. Ask me what were some of the skills we had to show!
  • For Literacy, we are beginning to learn more about storytelling. We are going to focus on fairytales. Today we looked at common features that all fairytales have. Ask me what are some of the features.

  • During PE, we continued with Drum Fit. We did Simon Says which was a ton of fun! After, we did some new songs with the Drum Fit Master!
  • In Science, we did an activity where we learned about different types of fasteners. We had to fasten paper in many ways. Ask me what were some of the fasteners we had to use. 
  • Today in Social, we learned about how people in the Ukraine adapt to their environment. Ask me what is an example we discussed. 

Reminders:

  • Field trip forms for the Calgary Zoo were sent home today. Please fill out and return the forms as soon as possible. The fee for the trip can be paid for on your Parent Power School portal. Volunteers with clearance and who have confirmed their availability a consent form was also sent home with your child. Please complete and return the form. 
  • Family Math Games Night will be on Thursday from 6:00pm - 7:30pm. Please see the Northern Lights News that was sent out last week for further details. We hope to see you there!
