Tuesday, Jan. 31

Highlights:

  • Today in Math we started with practicing the Stack It strategy for solving equations that do not involve regrouping. Then we moved on to use the base ten picture strategy for solving addition equations that involve regrouping. Ask me to solve 25 + 38 = using this strategy. 
  • For Literacy, we read the next book in the wordless picture book series we are using to help us with inferencing. Ask me what has happened next in the adventure!
  • In PE, we did scooter hockey. Ask me how it went!
  • For Music, we continued our learning on the different note values. We also did a review on the difference between rhythm and beat. Ask me to do the nursery rhyme for you below to show you both the pattern and beat!
  • Today for Science, we learned about a decibel metre and how it is used. We also continued learning about how different animals use their sense of hearing. Ask me what I learned about protecting our ears and its connection to the level of hertz.
  • For Social Studies, we learned about different landforms and regions that can be found in Peru. Ask me what is one region we can find. 

Reminders:

  • We are going on a community walk tomorrow for Winter Walk Day. Please see the note in yesterday's post for more details. Students are reminded to dress appropriately for the weather!
  • Tomorrow is Healthy Hunger - Booster Juice Fun Lunch for students that have ordered. 
  • A note about Valentine's Day was sent home with each child today. The note contains a list of all students in their class. Participation in the card exchange is optional

Highlights:

  • In Math, we reviewed the stack it (algorithm) strategy for solving addition and subtraction equations. Ask me to show you how to use this strategy to solve 95 - 43= and 22 + 45 = 
  • For Literacy, we continued to learn about inferencing. We know that this is a skill that good readers use to help understand stories. We read a wordless picture book called Journey. Ask me what inferences I made and the evidence I used from the story to support my thinking.
  • For PE, we played scooter basketball. It was a fun twist to basketball and many of us had a great time!

  • In Art, we learned about another famous painter named Andy Warhol. We learned he is famous for a style of paintings called pop art. We started creating our own pop art landscape.
  • Today for Makerspace, we worked on a building challenge. We looked at landmarks unique to Peru and Calgary. We worked in teams to recreate different landmarks.

  • On Wednesday, Feb. 1 we will be going on a community walk. We will be walking as a class to the painted murals on the fences along Coventry Hills Blvd. Students are reminded to dress for the weather and prepared to be out for a part of our afternoon. We will be leaving the school at 1:45pm and returning by 2:20pm.

Highlights:
  • Today in PE, we did helicopter as a warmup and then did skipping freedom frenzy! 
  • For Math today we continued practicing the Break it Apart strategy. We used it with subtraction equations. Ask me to show you how to solve 79-34= with this strategy.
  • In Literacy, we learned about how readers make inferences when they read. This means we look at clues in the pictures or words to figure out what the book is about. We read a wordless picture book called Flotsam to help us practice this strategy. Ask me what the story was about!
  • For Field Study. we took some time to play and explore in the snow! It was beautiful and many of us enjoyed having some time outside to play in the fluffy, soft snow.

 Highlights 

  • Today for Math we learned the 'break it apart' strategy.  This was a challenge for some of us, ask me to show you how to add two-digits using this strategy.  Here is an example of how it works incase I am having a hard time.
  • During Literacy we did our last rotation ask me what rotation I did today! We also learned the schwa sound. Ask me what the sound is and what are some examples of words that have this sound.
  • For gym we continued practicing our skipping!
  • This afternoon we did Van Gough inspired art.  Ask me what we made.

 Highlights

  • This morning for Math we continued learning about two digit equations.  We did two digit subtraction and addition using base 10.  Ask me to show you how to solve 56-21 using this strategy.  
  • For Literacy we continued practicing story retelling.  Today we did it orally.  Ask me if I can tell you about the story we read this morning. 
  • In gym we continued skipping.  Ask me what skills I am getting better at! 
  • This afternoon we talked about the steps of problem solving with friends, ask me if I can tell you the three steps

Highlights:
  • In Math today we played a few different Math games to help us with our number fact fluency.  Ask me about the three games, and how to play.
  • For Gym we continued skipping.  Ask me what skills I practiced.
  • For Literacy, we continued working on our retelling skills. We read The Mitten again but this time did not see the pictures. We had to pick out the main events from the story and draw them on a story board. Ask me what parts I chose for the beginning, middle, and end. 
  • Today in Science we continued to learn about how humans hear. We talked about how we can measure pitch and volume. We did an activity that helped us see how well our ears can hear different pitches. Ask me how pitch and our age connect. Below is a fun video we watched to hear pitch.

Highlights:
  • Today in Math, we worked on adding and subtracting without grouping. We used the strategy of drawing a base ten picture to solve the equations. Ask me to show you how I can solve 45+23= and 89-34=, using this strategy.
  • For Literacy, we read a story called The Bear and the Piano. We practiced retelling using the strategy of Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then. Ask me to retell the story using this format.
  • For PE, we continued with our skipping unit. Today we learned partner tricks! Ask me what trick I did.

  • In Music, we continued learning about the values of different notes. Ask me what note has 4 beats.
  • In Social Studies, we learned about Lunar New Year. Families in our class celebrated this weekend. We compared Lunar New Year to a celebration or tradition we have in our own families.

  • For Science, we reviewed the actions that help us remember how humans hear sound. Ask me to show you!

 Highlights

  • Today we learned about 'Fact Families' in Math.  Ask me how addition and subtraction relate to one another, and if I can give you an example of a fact family for numbers under 20
                                         
  • During Literacy we had our final rotation for our reading groups this week.  Ask me what group I was in
  • Ask me the skills I learned in gym today! 
  • This afternoon we had Music where we learned about different types of notes, and how many beats they are worth.  
  • Afterwards we took an imaginary field trip through the inside of an ear.  Ask me the parts of the ear.

 Highlights

  • This morning we started with Math where we reviewed estimating sums.  Ask me to show you a few examples.  We also practiced our basic addition and subtraction facts to 20.  Hopefully we can keep practicing these at home!  We also practiced our 2 Digit X 2 Digit Subtraction and addition playing snakes and ladders. 


  • For Literacy we had our reading rotations again.  Ask me what rotation I did. 
  • During art, we learned about famous artists and discussed what we liked and what we didn't like about famous art 

                                                      

  • This afternoon we went on a virtual trip to Peru, ask me what I was most interested in seeing from the video. 
  • We also had some time to be imaginative in Makerspace.  Ask me what I made.

 Highlights

  • This morning for Math we continued practicing estimating sums and differences.  Ask me to show you an example of how we do it! 
  • During Literacy we continued practicing our opinion writing.  Ask me to tell you what I wrote about and how I set up my writing! Afterwards, we had our reading group rotations ask me what reading group rotations I did today.  If I was with the teachers ask me what skill we worked on.
  • In Gym we learned some different ways of skipping.  Ask me if I can tell you a few of them. 
  • This afternoon we read the Jann Brett book 'The Mitten' ask me where the mitten story came from.  Then, we did paper tear art.

 Highlights

  • This morning during Math we practiced 'estimating' sums for two digit addition and two digit subtraction.  We practiced this by rounding the numbers, and then adding or subtracting the rounded numbers. We talked about how this skill is often used in real life.  Ask me to give you a few examples as to how! 

  • For Literacy we read the book: Duck! Rabbit! This was a book about differences of opinion.  Ask me if I thought it was a duck or a rabbit.  Afterwards, we practiced opinion writing.  Ask me what I wrote about
  • In gym we started jump rope.  Ask me one challenge and one success I had
  • This afternoon we created art based on sound waves.  Ask me the volume and pitch of my art

 Highlights

  • This morning we listened to a famous composer, and discussed how the famous piece made me feel. Ask me who the famous composer was. 
  • In gym it was the last day for crazy sports.  Ask me what crazy sport we played today! 
  • We had a finish up block where we finished our brochure on India, or we played a Math game.  Ask me what I did during this time. 
  • For Literacy we either finished our writing, or we did one of our reading groups.  Ask me what group I did. 
  • To end the day we went on a community walk, and we listened for Nature sounds. We also learned about storm ponds.   Ask me what sounds I heard and what storm ponds are for.

Highlights:
  • Today in Math, we practiced making groups of 10. Ask me to show you an example.
  • In Literacy, we learned about the suffix ed. Ask me to tell you about the 3 different sounds it makes at the end of words. 
  • For PE, we played Crazy Curling! 
  • In Science, we learned about the words volume, amplitude, and wavelength. Ask me to tell you what the pitch and volume of the wavelengths below are.

Highlights:
  • For Literacy, we wrote a story based on a picture that we were given. Ask me what the picture was about and what some of my ideas were.
  • For Math today we practiced regrouping.  We regrouped from ones-tens-hundreds-thousands.  Ask me how many ones cubes we had.


  • In PE, we played Crazy Basketball! Ask me what some of the different things we used as a ball today.
  • We did Word Work today. We learned a new rule for reading and spelling. Ask me an example of the words I sorted in my group.

  • Friday is wear your grade team colour day, we are green!
  • On Friday as part of our Field Study we will be going on a community walk. We will be walking to the Country Hills Village Pond. Below is a map of our route. We will be leaving at around 12:10PM and returning to the school by 1:00PM. Students are reminded to dress appropriately for the weather and wear proper footwear.

January 10 - Tuesday

 Highlights

  • Today for Math we wrapped up the work we started yesterday for Place Value.  Once that was done, we talked about the different ways shapes move.  Ask me the 3 ways they move, then, we practiced moving shapes around and looking at how reflections, slides, and rotations impact shapes.  Does a shape change when you move it in any direction?





  • For Literacy we learned about the final part of a paragraph.  The Conclusion! We practiced writing concluding sentences.  We also had our reading groups today.  Ask me what 2 rotations I did for reading today. 
  • This afternoon we had Science where we did a Science experiment.  Ask me how water in a glass impacts pitch.  This is an experiment I can show you at home. 
  • To finish the day we began our 'Show What You Know' for India.  Ask me any fun facts I learned today. 
  •
