Friday, Apr. 28

Highlights:

  • In Maker Space, we had a quick introduction to Scratch Jr. We will be starting to use it next week as we continue to learn about coding!

  • For PE, we went outside and played Capture the Flag!
  • For Math, we did a few different centres that helped us practice our learning on fractions. Ask me which centre was my favourite.
  • In Literacy, we continued learning how to create cursive letters. We did the letters e, l, f, h, k, r, and s. Ask me to show you how to create them.
  • For Field Study, we are starting to gather information for our bio blitz. Today we went into the school field and found a tree that we are going to research. Ask me what tree I have chosen and its location. 

Reminders:

  • Wednesday is Hats on for Mental Health Day. Students are welcome to wear a hat all day!

Highlights:
  • This morning we had a fire drill! We did a great job getting out quickly and quietly.
  • For Math, we learned a new game where we compared fractions. If we have a deck of cards, I can show you!
  • For Literacy, we talked about the rule for plural nouns. We learned when to add the 's' or the 'es' at the end. Ask me for an example of each.
  • During PE, we played Fruit Salad! Ask me how to play the game.
  • Today in Art, we learned about an artist that makes wire sculptures. We then used pipe cleaners to create different structures. We had to make sure that our structures had a purpose. Ask me what I created!
 
  • For Social, we talked about some of the landforms and regions found in Ukraine. Ask me what is one of them. 
Reminders:
  • As the weather is warming up, we are reminding students to please have a water bottle that they can use throughout the day.

Highlights:

  • Today in Math, we compared fractions that do not have the same denominator. We used the fraction strips to help us solve the problems. 
  • For Literacy, we learned about synonyms and antonyms. Ask me what they both are and examples of each. 
 

  • In PE, we played infection tag. Ask me how we play!
  • During Social, we continued to learn about the customs and traditions of the Ukraine. Ask me which tradition I found the most interesting. 
  • In Maker Space, we built our second maze for our coding robots. Ask me how my group had to change our design and the materials we used.

Highlights:

  • In Math, we learned about comparing fractions that have common denominators (same number on the bottom). We used the symbols < and > to show which fractions where greater than or less than. Ask me which symbol would go below.
  • For Literacy, we learned about hyperboles and similes. Ask me what they both are and an example. 

  • Today in PE, we went back outside and played Castle Defenders. We really enjoy playing this game!
  • During Health, we talked about the importance of physical activity. We drew our favourite way that we like to move our bodies. We also started creating a plan for the different ways we can develop our physical fitness! Ask me what I included.
  • In Social, we learned about the traditions and celebrations in the Ukraine. Ask me what is an example.

Reminders:

  • We will be going on a field trip next month on May 23. If you have volunteer clearance and are available that day, please email your child's teacher. If you were interested in volunteering please ensure you fill out a clearance form as soon as possible and return it to the main office so that it can be processed.

Highlights:

  • Today in Math we continued working on fractions. We practiced colouring in a fraction and then writing down the opposite. For example, if the fraction coloured in was 2/5 then the opposite would be 3/5 to make a whole. We also used pattern blocks to help us create different fractions.
  • In Literacy, we talked about dialogue and how it can make stories more interesting especially when we read it in the characters voice. After, we wrote a short paragraph that included dialogue. Ask me what I wrote about.
  • In PE, we went outside and played a game called Castle Defenders. Ask me how we play! 
  • For Social Studies, we continued our Ukraine trip planning. Ask me what is a new fact I learned about the Ukraine. 
  • In Makerspace, we built our mazes for our coding robots. Ask me if my coding sequence worked!

Highlights:

  • Today in PE, we played All Sports Challenge! It was tons of fun. Ask me how we play.
  • In Math, we used the fraction circles to create different designs. Ask me what fractions I included in mine.

  • During Field Study, we did our Earth Day pledge by picking up litter on our community walk. We filled up 6 bags with litter!
  • For Literacy, we learned the cursive letters for i, t, p, u, w and j. Ask me to show you how to make them and some words such as put, tip, and pit.

Highlights:

  • This morning in Math we started to learn about fractions! For the fraction below, ask me which one is the numerator and which is the denominator in the first picture. For the second picture, ask me what is the fraction coloured.
  • Today we worked on a secret project for two important members of our school staff. Ask me who we are making the project for! 
  • For PE, we played a game called Fire and Ice! Ask me what the rules of the game are. 
  • In Word Work, we got our new sorts. Ask me what the rule for my sort was and an example of a word.
  • For Science, we talked about safety for structures. We learned that structures needs to be strong and stable to protect things from harm. Ask me what example I came up with.
Highlights:
  • Tomorrow we will be going on our community walk. Please see yesterday's blog post for further details. Students are reminded to dress for the weather. 
  • It is Blue and Green Day tomorrow!

Highlights:

  • In Math, we finished up our Show What You Know that we started yesterday. After, we played different Math games such as number kaboom and multiplication chart bingo. Ask me what my favourite game was.
  • For Literacy, we used our circle story plans from yesterday to create a visual journal page. We are illustrating our story using a circle organizer. We also read another Laura Numeroff book!
  • During PE, we played Snowman Down again! We had a ton of fun with this game.
  • In Music, we used the boomwhackers and xylophones to play the melody for True Colours. Ask me which I liked using better.
  • For Science, we talked about strong structures and how structures all have a purpose. Ask me what was an example of a structure we looked at and its purpose. 

Reminders:

  • On Friday, we will be going on a community walk. As part of our commitment to Earth Day, we will be helping to clean up the earth by picking up litter. We will be leaving at 11:15am and returning to the school at noon.

  • Friday is wear Blue and Green Day!

Highlights:
  • This morning in Math we worked on a show me what you know for multiplication and division. We answered different questions that connected to all the skills we have been learning about.
  • In Literacy, we are learning about circular plots. We are using Laura Numeroff's books as our mentor text. We started to plan our own versions of a circle story. Ask me what my story is going to be about.


 
  • In PE, we played another cooperative game called Snowman Down. Ask me how to play the game.
  • In Science, we talked about how to make structures stable. We did two different demonstrations. Ask me what happened!

  • In Maker Space, we used the code and go mice. We learned how to properly use them and also create sequences.

Reminders:
  • Continue to bring litterless lunches! Our class has been doing a great job of having less waste everyday.

Highlights:

  • For Math, we worked on something called compensation for multiplication questions. This means using an easier math fact to help us solve one that we feel is more tricky. Ask me to show you how to use this strategy for 5x8=
  • In Literacy, we shared our stories with a partner. It was so great to see how everyones stories were all so unique even though they all started from the same picture prompt. Ask me what my favourite part of my partners story was. 
  • For PE, we played a cooperative game called Monster Ball. It helped us practice our throwing and aiming skills. It was a ton of fun!

  • In Music, we played a rhythm imposter game for warm up. We had to listen very carefully to identify the correct pattern. We then used the boomwhackers to learn a song called True Colours.
  • For Science, we talked about the importance of engineers are the three questions they ask. What is the problem? Who has the problem? Why is it important? We then looked at different structures and had to choose which we prefer and why. Ask me what were some of the examples.

  • We are encouraging everyone to bring a litterless lunch for the week and to walk or wheelie to school!

Highlights:

  • We started our morning off with Maker Space! We continued our exploration with the code-a-pillars by using cards that had a coding sequence on it. We then used the code to discover what it made the code-a-pillar do. Ask me what my favourite coding function is.
  • For PE, we played a gymnastics challenge. We had to practice skills like balance and different travels. Ask me which one was my favourite. 
  • For Math, we did our Math rotations. We practiced the different strategies we have been learning for multiplication and division. Ask me what my favourite rotation was. 
  • In Literacy, we are starting to learn how to do cursive writing! Today we learned how to create the lowercase letters c, a, d, q, and g. Ask me to show you how to create them.

Reminders:

  • Monday is Nature Day Spirit Day. Students are welcome to dress like they are ready to explore nature!
  • Next week for Environmental Week we are encouraging students to bring litterless lunches and also walk or wheelie to school.
  • Friday, April 21 is Wear Blue or Green day.
