December 22 - Thursday

 Highlights

  • This morning Ms. Muma's class joined us for Math and taught them a staircase Math game using dice.  Maybe I can teach you how to play! Then we played other Math games. 
  • For Literacy we read The Polar Express and we did some opinion writing about what the best gift you can give someone is.  Ask me what my opinion was. 
  • This afternoon we watched The Polar Express and compared it to the book.  Ask me the similarities and differences. 

Reminders
  • Today (December 22) is the last day of school before winter break.  There is no school until January 9.
  • January 9 - First day back after break.

December 21 - Wednesday

Highlights

  • This morning we started our day with Math.  We continued to talk about shapes.  We talked about parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines as well as obtuse acute and right angles.  Some of us did find the angles a bit challenging so we will review these in the new year! 
  • For Literacy we played some word games, and finished our Words Their Way sorts.  These words have come home!
  • In P.E. we played an enhanced version of mission impossible.  Ask me what we played and the rules.  


  • This afternoon we talked about goods and services in India.  Ask me for some examples. 

Reminders
  • Tomorrow is the last day before break.  It is also PJ day!
  • We will be watching a movie connected to our Literacy work tomorrow.  If students would like they can bring a small special snack to eat while we watch it.  (similar to second snack on Friday's)

December 20 - Tuesday

 Highlights 

  • This morning we started our day with a shape hunt.  We went around the room looking at shapes trying to decide if certain shapes were polygons or not.  Ask me the different reasons shapes weren't polygons. 

  • For Literacy we tried a new thing called flip grid! Ask me how it worked, what my opinion was, and how I supported it. 
  • This afternoon we made a surprise for art class! 
  • We finished the day with a guided drawing as lots of us were very excited.

December 19 - Monday

 Highlights

  • This morning we started our day with Math.  We continued to discuss shapes. Today we learned about polygons.  Ask me what 2 things a polygon needs.  
  • For Literacy we read a book called' Memoirs of an Elf'.  Afterwards we wrote about what would make us a good elf.  Ask me what qualities of mine would make me a good elf. 


  • In P.E. we played Mission Impossible ask me what the obstacles were.
  • This afternoon, we had Music were we got to do a few new things, ask me what they were and what skills we practiced. 
  • In Science class we did Chrome Music Lab ask me what it was all about and it is something we can access at home.

Friday December 16

 Highlights

  • This morning we started our day with Makerspace and for a change we did it in the classroom.  Ask me what I built. 
  • In gym class we played one of our favourite games GAGA Ball.  Ask me the rules, and what choices we had once we were out of the game. 
  • For Field Study we went around the school listening to the different sounds we could make using our pencils on different items throughout the school.

Reminders
  • Please dress warmly or bring your snowpants in your bags.  Next week is supposed to be very cold and it is important to be prepared.

Thursday, Dec. 15

Highlights:

  • Today in Math, we created winter pictures using 2D shapes. We had to tally the number of vertices and sides. Ask me what I included in my picture.
  • For Literacy, we talked about the Bossy R rule. Ask me what this means and how this rule works for words. We also read a story called Thingamabob. Ask me what the important message was in the story.

  • Today in Music, we performed the songs that we learned on the boomwhackers with our group. Everyone did fantastic!
  • In Science, we had a very cool demonstration using dancing rice which helped us to "see" sound. Ask me what happened and how it connects to vibrations.
  • For Social Studies, we did a final look at all the different coins/bills from around the world. Ask me what were some of the similarities and differences that we saw. All students who brought money have taken them home today, please check backpacks.

 Highlights

  • For Literacy today we read a book called double take, this prompted a conversation about opposites.  Ask me what an opposite is and if I can give you an example.  We also did our reading rotations, ask me what stations my rotation took me to today. 
  • During P.E. Mr. Newton pretended to be the Grinch and he hid all the presents.  Ask me how we played the game and what the rules were.  Here is a picture of the winning team. 
  • This afternoon for Social Studies we talked about goods and services.  Ask me what the difference between the two are.

     Highlights 

    • Today we started a new topic in Math! We will be focussing on shapes over the next little while.  We began making a co-created anchor chart about shapes! Afterwards, we talked about two new math terms.  Regular and Irregular polygons! Ask me what they are! 
    • During Literacy we talked about suffixes, and then we had our reading rotations after P.E.  Ask me what reading rotations I did today. 
    • This afternoon we practiced our boomwacker song with our group for our performance next music class.  Ask me what song my group is performing. 
    • During Science we did a demonstration using a ruler where we learned about different sounds and how they impact vibrations.  Ask me something I learned about how sound and vibrations work.

     Highlights

    • This morning for Math we did our last graphing activity.  We flipped a coin and graphed how many heads and how many tails we got.  Ask me what the trick of the activity was?
    • For Literacy we read the book Dog vs. Cat, then we wrote about our opinion on which is better dog or cat.  Ask me my reasons! 
    • This afternoon we did a perspective art project where we read snowmen at night, and drew a similar picture using oil pastels.  Ask me what perspective means. 
    • To finish the day we did some free building in Makerspace ask me what I made!

    Highlights:

    • This morning we started our day off with Music. We broke off into small groups to practice and learn a song on the boomwhackers that we will perform to the group next week. Ask me what song my group is doing!
    • In Math, we did a fun graphing activity with dice. Ask me which number I rolled the greatest and least amount of.
    • We created holiday cards that we will be giving to seniors that live at Newport Harbour. We read a story called Share Some Kindness, Bring Some Light. Ask me what the message was in this story.
    • For Field Study, we did a senses walk. We went to different spots around the outside of the school and used our senses to investigate and list what we found.

     Highlights

    • This morning we had Math.  We finished up the graphing activity we did yesterday, and if we were finished that we practiced making a pictograph from a bar graph.  Ask me what the important components of a pictograph are.  
    • In Literacy we continued our phonics practice.  We learned a few new rules.  Ask me what they are.  Afterwards, we had our reading rotation.  Ask me what rotation my group did today. 
    • This afternoon we had art where we learned about perspective.  Ask me what we made and what mediums we used. 
    • To finish the day we did our NorthPole Ninja act of kindness!

     Highlights 

    • This morning for Math we continued practicing our graphing.  Today we came up with our own question for us to graph, and went around collecting the data then used a bar graph to represent the information. Ask me what information I collected, and the options I gave the class. 

    • For Literacy we made a mind map of our favourites to prepare us for continuing our opinion writing.  Ask me what favourites I listed. 
    • This afternoon we continued to refine our boomwacker skills.  We learned some new songs ask me what songs we learned! 
    • During Science we continued to learn about different sounds we hear at home, in nature, and at school.  Ask me what I listed.

    Highlights:

    • Today in Math, we started by playing a quick warm up game called I Love Math! Ask me to show you how we play this game. We continued our learning about collecting data. We used the data we gathered yesterday to represent it in a bar graph. At the end, we learned another fun game called Fill the Stairs. 
    • For Literacy, we continued our learning on the reading power of questioning. We reviewed the difference between a quick question and a deep question. Ask me where we find answers for quick questions and also where we find answers for deep questions. We practiced this skill using another fun story by Jon Klassen!
    • Today we received our new word sorts. We worked on learning the rules to use when we sort the words. Ask me what the rule for my words are and an example.
    • For Health, we talked about positive self-talk and how this helps us when we are hard on ourselves. We came up with 5 things we can tell ourselves to help us feel better in difficult situations. Ask me what some of my affirmations were.


    • Today was Dress Like You're Going on Vacation Day! Many of us were thinking of warm, sunny vacations!

     Highlights

    • Today we started our day with Math.  We began a new unit where we are practicing gathering data, and tomorrow we will be making graphs! Today we read a book called Talley Cat and used talley marks to record the information we gathered.  Ask me which colour was our classes favourite. 
    • For Literacy we read 'Hey Little Ant'.  Then, we practiced opinion writing and giving reasons for it.  Ask me what my opinion was and my reasons for it. 
    • For P.E. we continued our soccer skills ask me what I played


    • This afternoon we had music and continued to practice our boomwacker skills. Ask me the songs we played.

    Please make sure students are dressed for the weather.  Sometimes it can change quickly, even if they don't need it in the morning please make sure snowpants, mittens, toques etc. are in bags just in case!

     HIghlights

    • We started our day by reading a note from Jingles our classroom elf.  He asked us to make him a room out of our makerspace supplies for him.  On Monday he will choose his favourite.  Ask me what my group built. 


    • Today for Literacy we finished up our word sorts.  Ask me the rules my words sorted by.  Then, we read a story called We Found A Hat.  Ask me about the twist at the end. 
    • To finish the day we made our wish tree ornaments and made a wish for friends, families, communities or world.  Ask me what I wished for.

    Highlights:
    • In Math we worked subtraction without regrouping. We used base ten blocks to show our learning.
    • We have a special guest in our classroom for the month! Ask me what we named him and some of the ways we showed kindness today.
    • For Literacy, we talked about the rule we can use for when the letter Y makes the sound I or E. Ask me what the rule was and examples of words.
    • In Phys. Ed we played pinball soccer to practice our kicking and passing. 
    • For Music, we continued playing the boomwhackers. We played two festive holiday songs. Ask me what they were.
    • In Social Studies, we watched a video of some animals we can find in India. We made a comparison of the wild animals found in India and the ones we find in Alberta.
