Monday October 31

 Highlights

  • We started our day out today with Pumpkin themed activities.  We did a number talk comparing our two pumpkins.  Ask me some of the questions we asked about pumpkins.  Then we made estimates about our pumpkins.  Ask me how accurate my estimates were. 
  • For Literacy we made a SPOOKY halloween story, we rolled dice and depending on what we rolled it told us what we should write about.  Ask me what my story was about.

  • This afternoon we watched the pumpkin patch video sent out by Mrs. Brinson.  We got to see our families celebrate fall in a variety of ways. 

  • We finished the day by doing Halloween Art! Ask me what we drew.Have a safe and Happy Halloween from the 2/3 Party Animals! 



Reminders
  • If you want to order a piece of NLS spirit wear you need to do it by Wednesday! We have posted a separate post with instructions on how to do that, and a notice has gone home with oldest or only siblings. 
  • Please remind children they are not to bring tons of candy and junk food to school. One treat per day when at school is sufficient as they need proper brain and body food snacks and lunches to be at their best.Make sure that Lunches don't have too much Halloween candy in them

NLS Spirit Wear (t-shirts and hoodies) can be ordered until 7:00 pm this Wednesday, November 2.  A form with the details came home to every family today for more details.

 Highlights

  • This morning for Math we made a creature using base 10 blocks.  We had to keep track of the 100's 10's and 1's we used to make our creature.  Ask me what the biggest challenge was, and what I had to include in my creation




  • For Literacy we finished our personal narrative and read Knuffle Bunny Free! Ask me what the story was about. 
  • This afternoon we finished our leaf art.  Ask me what warm and cool colours are. 
  • To finish the day, we had a STEM challenge whee we had to create an apartment building using a variety of different materials. Ask me what my biggest challenge was. 

Reminders - Halloween
Students may:
 - wear their regular clothes 
- wear orange and black 
- wear a simple costume that does not interfere with learning 
Students may not: 
- wear full face costume masks 
- bring costume accessories (ie. weapons) 
- wear costumes they are not comfortable in for the day during all learning activities
- wear costumes that interfere with learning time 
- spend instructional time putting on costumes or makeup 
- bring candy or treats to share with their peers or class

  • For Math this morning we continued to practice our expanded form.  To help us, we used graph paper to make our base ten blocks,  We represented the number four ways, ask me to show you a number represented 4 ways. 

  • For Literacy today we read Knuffle Bunny Too and continued working on our small moment writing.  Ask me what small moment was in Knuffle Bunny Too. 


  • This afternoon we had Music where we continued the Solfege Scale.  Ask me to show you the hand signals we learned 
  • We also had a whole school 'read out' we swapped it to inside because outside was wet and muddy.

 Highlights

  • For Math we practiced expanded form.  We filled in missing blanks, expanded numbers and shrunk them back to standard form. 
  • For Literacy we continued to talk about watermelon, slice and seed stories.  We showed each level of one of our own personal narratives.  Ask me what I wrote about. 
  • In Gym we played another game of pumpkin smash
  • This afternoon we did a science experiment where we learned how to test for, streak, colour, size, fizz, magnetism, lustre, hardness and texture ask me about my rocks that I tested.

 Highlights

  • This morning we started our day with a review of 100's Blocks.  We talked about how you could use things like boxes of 100 straws or a bag of marbles to represent numbers the same way that you use base 10 blocks.  Ask me what pattern I learned today. 

  • For Literacy we talked about personal narratives and how some stories are watermelons, slices, or seeds.  Ask me how I added details to my story so it applied to each of those kinds of stories.  After, we ready Jambari Jumps.  Ask me what kind of story that was. 
  • In P.E. we played pumpkin smash.  Ask me the rules of the game!

                                                 
  • This afternoon we used the Chromebooks to learn about Diwali, ask me a fact I learned about this celebration!

Highlights:

  • Today we started our day with Maker Space. We read a story called The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes. We discussed the important lesson in the story and how it can connect to the learning and work we do in Maker Space.
  • For Literacy, we read a story called You Will Be My Friend! In the story we talked about how authors and illustrators show different perspectives. We also wrote steps on how to make a friend. Ask me how my steps were different from the main characters.





  • During PE, we continued to playing half court basketball games.
  • In Math, we started with a quick how many ways can you show a number. We also reviewed the place value of numbers.

  • In Art, we continued to work on our fall leaf art. We drew different types of leaves, outlined them in sharpie. After, we talked about the warm and cool colours. We choose cool colours for our background. Ask me what cool colours I have chosen.

  • Read my Shirt Day is on Oct. 24. Students are invited to wear a shirt to school that has words on it for others to read.

 Dear Families,

Next week is Literacy Week! There are a few spirit days next week to help us celebrate and get in the literacy spirit.

    • Read my Shirt Day – October 24th

Your student can wear a shirt that has words on it for others to read!

    • Teacher Swap Book Reading – October 25th

Teachers will travel to a different classroom to read a story to a different class.

    • Whole School Read Out – October 26th

Everyone in the whole school will go out to the field, pick a spot and read outside.

    • Stop Drop and Read Day – October 27th

Several times during this day the students will hear an announcement to stop, drop and read. 


We hope these spirit days will get everyone get even more excited about Literacy at Northern Lights School!


Highlights


  • This morning we started our day with Literacy.  Since it was take me outside day, we went outside to do our 4 sketches.  We went to a variety of spaces around the school property and chose to draw one thing from those areas.  Ask me one interesting thing I saw.  
  • For math we continued to practice identifying the place value of a number in larger numbers.  We also worked on our problem solving practice by completing a three act task.  Ask me how we figured out how many woppers were in the jar.  Was my estimate too big or too small.  To finish up we finished our math activity outside.  
  • This afternoon we learned a new song in music.  Ask me if I can sing you any parts of it, o show you the hand movements. 
  • To finish the day we talked about qualities of a rock, and other rock vocabulary. 
Reminders
  • All grade 3's need to have a jacket with them when they come to school.  We often have outside activities planned, or the weather can change suddenly and unexpectedly. 
  • We are being asked to bring 5 rocks to school.  If they are special please put them in a Ziploc bag with your name on it

Highlights:

  • Today in Literacy, we read a story called Some Pets. We made our own versions using the same pattern.
  • We did an act of kindness today to welcome Ms. Elago back from her wedding on the weekend by making her cards. She is now Mrs. Pham! We practiced our drawing skills and wrote short notes.
  • In PE, we went outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather. We did scoops and balls and also played frisbee.
  • Today was Picture Day! We took our class photos and individual ones too. Ask me to show you the smile I used for my photo!
  • In Health, we continued talking about the difference between meanness, rudeness, conflict and bullying. Ask me about the book we read today and the important message in it.
  • For MakerSpace, we had some time to explore and build with different materials. Ask me what my favourite centre is!

Reminders:
  • Tomorrow is Take Me Outside Day! We will be doing some of our learning outside for parts of the day. Students are reminded to dress for the weather.

 Highlights

  • Today for Literacy we read a story called 'Tap Tap Boom Boom' we also listened to a song called 'Flight of The Bumblebee'.  We talked about how different pieces of music and stories can tap into different pockets in our brains.  Ask me what 3 brain pockets we learned about, and what this story and song reminded me of. 
  • For Math we solved a 3 Act Task with skittles and a lightbulb.  Ask me the three strategies we learned about. 
  • This afternoon we played rhythm Bingo.  Ask me how many squares I was able to cover while playing Bingo. 
  • We also had a class discussion about friendship skills.  What are some ways I can solve problems with friends?

Monday October 17

 Highlights

  • This morning we started our day with a Zoom call hosted by 'Take Me Outside'.  The topic was: 'The Importance of Plant Knowledge' and the presenter was Joe Pitawanakwat.  We were only able to watch 2/3 of the plants he discussed.  One was Willow Trees and the other was St. John's Wart.  Ask me what made these two special.  (Hint: the willow tree has natural antifreeze and St.John's Wart helps with the sunshine vitamin)
  • For Literacy we wrapped up an activity we started on Friday talking about adjectives.  We were to choose our favourite food, draw a mind map of a few adjectives that applied and then write a few detailed sentences on that food.  Ask me what food I chose and how I described it. 



  • This afternoon we had Science where we used gumballs to compare rocks and minerals.  Ask me how we connected these two things! 
  • We also had a fire drill this afternoon where our class was safe, serious and silent and we followed our evacuation map perfectly! Ask me if I have any worries relating to this. 
  • To wrap up the day we went outside for take me outside day and played in the beautiful sunshine.  We also talked about how our story this morning outlined how important sunshine is for our bodies and depending on where we live this is sometimes impacted by winter! Ask me what my favourite part of the playground is

 Highlights

  • In Math today we learned about the greater than and less than symbol.  Ask me how to order numbers using the chart we made in class.

  • We continued our personal narratives and wrote about times where we felt strong emotions. Ask me what I wrote about! 
  • This afternoon we went on our community walk.  Ask me what I saw, smelled, and felt while we were on our walk!
  • In MakerSpace we explored the different materials and built different objects. Ask me what my group created.

 Highlights 

  • This morning we wrote a personal narrative that involved someone special.  We made a web about memories with a special person, then we began writing in more detail one of the memories.  Ask me who I chose and what my memories were.  
  • In gym class we played basketball, ask me what skill we practiced today! 
  • This afternoon we tried something new on music where we played musical notes on the computer.  Ask me what season our new song was about. 
  • To finish our day we did an Art Hub for kids where we practiced improving drawing people.

Highlights:

  • Today in Literacy we started to learn about personal narratives. Ask me what this means.
  • In Math, we did a 3 Act Task as a warm up. We also worked on the different ways we can show a number. Ask me what is one what to show the number 435 and 2678.

  • In PE, we started basketball. We worked on dribbling. Ask me what other skills we practiced.
  • For Science, we continued our rocks and minerals research using the Chromebooks. Ask me what one of the rocks my group found information for.

  • We were introduced to a new website where we could read and listen to different books. Ask me what the site is called!


  • In Art, we finished working on our grateful trees. They turned out beautiful! Ask what things I am grateful for.

  • This morning we were introduced to our word of the day 'Grateful'.  We read a book, and created our pumpkin of gratefulness.  Ask me what I am most grateful for! 
  • For Math we finished up work that we started yesterday, and played Math games with others in the class.  
  • For gym class we had a special visitor, ask me who it was! We continued to finish up our throwing and catching games.  Ask me what we played. 
  • This afternoon we played rhythm sticks and did a watercolour activity.  Ask me what we painted with watercolour. 
  • To finish out the day we were introduced to a new country.  Ask me what country it was.

 Highlights

  • This morning we talked about how verbs and subjects in sentences need to agree.  We practiced editing sentences so that we could recognize when a sentence had a mistake.  Ask me what rule I learned.  After, we read the story 'The Best Part Of Me' ask me what part of me is the best part and why. 
  • For Math we played a new game called 'Ready Set Show'.  Then we practiced saying larger numbers.  Ask me what we named the 'space' in a larger number, and how it helps me learn to say these numbers. 

  • This afternoon we went to Music where we continued our rhythm game and learned a more complicated way to pass the rhythm sticks.  Ask me what new move I learned.  Afterwards we had a sing a long. 


  • We also did some investigating on the rock cycle.  Ask me what the three forms of rock are that the rock cycle makes.
