Monday, Sept. 26

Highlights:

  • Today during Literacy we talked about the difference between nouns and verbs. I can share with you examples of each. We read a book called Ish and looked for all the nouns and verbs. We then did our own book hunt where we tried to find examples.

  • In Math, we continue to review expanded form. Ask me to expand the number 346. We also learned a new Power of Ten called called Slap 1!
  • For Science, we learned about what geology is and the geologists that study rocks.
  • In Health, we read a fun story called Horrible Bear. We connected the story to strategies that we use to cool off when we feel upset or angry. Ask me what my strategies are!

  • For Makerspace, we explored new materials to create and build with. Ask me what material I was given and what I created with it.

Reminders:
  • Thursday is Orange Shirt Day.
  • There is no school on Friday.

On Thursday, September 29, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt (or an orange article of clothing if they don't have an orange shirt) to recognize Orange Shirt Day and National Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for everyone to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community. Orange Shirt day began in 2013 when residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, shared how her orange shirt was taken away on her first day at residential school. For more information about Orange Shirt Day please visit https://www.cbc.ca/kidscbc2/the-feed/what-is-orange-shirt-day

September 30 is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada. The intention of this day is to recognize and honor residential school survivors, their families and communities. It also ensures that public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. This is a non-operation day for the CBE. Our students will be engaging in learning prior to September 30 to honor this important day and to show our school community’s commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action. Make sure you read our blog posts to learn more about the activities and learning students are doing in their classrooms and within Northern Lights School.
